OWN’s Six-Part Docuseries “Rebuilding Black Wall Street” Premieres, Showcasing Tulsa’s Resilience
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is set to debut a six-part docuseries titled “Rebuilding Black Wall Street,” hosted by the talented actor Morris Chestnut. The series, premiering on Friday, September 29 at 9 PM ET/8 PM CST, delves into the enduring impact of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre and the inspiring journey of the resilient Tulsa community.
The Greenwood District, famously known as Black Wall Street, was once a thriving center for Black business leaders, homeowners, and civic leaders. Tragically, in 1921, it was destroyed by a violent mob, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and the destruction of homes and businesses.
“Rebuilding Black Wall Street” narrates the story of Greenwood’s resurgence, highlighting its journey of resilience and hope. Across six episodes, Morris Chestnut, alongside expert build teams led by designers Jon Pierre and Mary Tjon-Joe-Pin of “Two Steps Home,” guides viewers through Greenwood’s rich history. The series introduces the personal stories of individuals, many of whom are descendants of original Black Wall Street residents. Viewers will witness the challenges of large-scale construction and share in the promise of Greenwood’s bright future as new businesses and projects take shape.
Some of the featured stories include Montika Collins’ effort to create North Tulsa’s only natural birthing center, Rachel Walker’s preservation of her ancestral home, and D’Marria Monday’s mission to create a haven for recently incarcerated women. The series also focuses on Rodney and Sheila Clark’s family farm, the historic Skyline Mansion, and the opening of Fixins Soul Kitchen by former NBA star Kevin Johnson, where three survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre are in attendance.
